Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale membrane vesicles actively secreted by cells (30–150 nm in diameter), broadly present in blood, urine, saliva, cerebrospinal fluid and other body fluids. Encapsulating bioactive substances including proteins, nucleic acids and lipids, EVs faithfully reflect the physiological and pathological status of parent cells, making them highly promising biomarker carriers for liquid biopsy.

Liquid biopsy acquires disease biological information non-invasively via body fluid samples. Compared with traditional tissue biopsy, it delivers prominent strengths: non-invasive sampling, repeatable specimen collection and dynamic disease monitoring.

Among all liquid biopsy targets, EVs attract extensive attention owing to unique biological characteristics: non-invasive sampling, highly specific biomarkers, and close correlation between EVs release levels with disease progression and therapeutic response, enabling continuous tracking of disease conditions. EVs-based detection represents a vital development direction of liquid biopsy.
